The Eastern Cape is an area of remarkable natural diversity that includes the lush, evergreen Tsitsikamma Forest, the rugged Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area, the breath-taking southern slopes of the Drakensberg and the arid Great Karoo. Known as the land of rolling hills, the region is filled with endless sweeps of rocky coves and sandy beaches, towering mountain ranges and verdant forests and offers plenty of tours and trips to the adventurous visitor. Known for its astonishing coastline, the Eastern Cape is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. The region also boasts a deep cultural heritage and is the birthplace of many prominent South Africans, including Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Thabo Mbeki.
While not commonly considered a safari destination, the Eastern Cape is home to the Addo Elephant National Park. Situated 72km north of Port Elizabeth, the province’s largest city, Addo spans just under 300 000 acres of malaria-free game viewing. The park was established to protect the remaining members of the once mighty elephant herds that roamed the area. Today, over 450 of these Gentle Giants inhabit this sanctuary in peace in the company of Cape Buffalo, Black Rhino and a variety of Antelope, offering the visitor a true South African safari.
