9 NightsDestinations: South Africa
Harold and his partner travelled from the USA to celebrate New Year’s Eve and explore some of the best South Africa has to offer. From the best whale-watching spot in the world, the couple spent time exploring Hermanus, shopping at local artisanal shops and boutiques, wine tasting and taking in the general splendour around their luxury hotel. With a full-day private tour of Cape Town’s Cape Peninsula and a Big 5 safari also on their itinerary, this trip highlighted some of the best of South Africa’s diverse urban and wildlife offerings, with Harold promising to return, soon!
On arriving at Cape Town International Airport , Harold and his partner were met by the VIP airport team and assisted with luggage collection and meeting their driver for a private road transfer to their luxury hotel, Birkenhead, in Hermanus where they rang in the new year. With its exhilarating cliff-top position overlooking the whale-watching paradise of Walker Bay, Birkenhead House provides luxury accommodation for those seeking an extraordinary coastal experience. Watch surfers carving through the waves and, for several months each year, witness Southern Right and Humpback Whales breaching just metres from the shore. Full of quaint boutiques, markets and galleries, the town is a popular South African tourist destination for local and international visitors.
After breakfast and check out the couple was met in the hotel lobby by their private local guide, with both the guide and the vehicle at their disposal for the day to explore Cape Town at their own pace. From wine tastings and lunch at the Norval Foundation to a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain and a visit to the Jewish Museum, Harold and his partner had plenty to choose from before checking into the elegant Cape Grace Hotel at the V&A Waterfront. Day six of their journey featured a full-day tour of the Cape Peninsula with a delicious lunch at Harbour House in Kalk Bay and stops at Camps Bay, Cape Point, Boulders Penguin Colony, Hout Bay Harbour and a drive along Chapman’s Peak.
The pair checked out for their early road transfer back to the airport for their scheduled flight to Nelspruit’s Kruger Mpumalanga Airport. Upon arrival they were assisted to the Federal Airlines lounge and onwards to their waiting scheduled charter flight to Londolozi Tree Camp, where they were met by their ranger team and transferred to the lodge in an open safari vehicle for their first game drive. Londolozi boasts two of South Africa’s only 17 master trackers, and with over 16 000 hectares of traversing wilderness, no two game drives are ever the same. Trackers sit up at the front of the Land Rover looking for fresh animal tracks, while rangers drive with astonishing skill into ravines and through thicket in pursuit of elusive animals, simultaneously wowing guests with their outstanding knowledge and unforgettable stories.
After a final safari activity and a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, the couple were transferred back to the airstrip to board the small plane flight back to Nelspruit Airport for their onward flight to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. On arrival at OR Tambo, a VIP airport team assisted them with their check in for their international flight home.
